I Saw Two Things Happening
Tim Plaisted 2006, 2007
The work plays a short text about two people meeting, coming together and then parting. The words scroll slowly back and forth horizontally across the two screens of a Nintendo DS. At the same pace, the Nintendo DS moves slowly along a metal track mounted on the wall, gradually revealing the scrolling text on its screens.
To read the full text, the viewer must follow the DS as it moves along the wall. The work therefore is both the installation of the text on the motorised DS and the experience of watching people move in to read and follow the device and part again.
The original text was written by Beth Jackson as a collaboration. For the 2007 Mérida Biennale showing, the text on the top screen was translated into Spanish by the exhibition's curator, Raúl Moarquech Ferrera-Balanquet.
The work was originally developed for the New TV exhibition which was assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
